The Temple Bar, Dublin Ireland
austin photographs

This past summer my son Matthew & I took a trip to the UK. Matthew is very interested in history (it’s one of his minors at Texas A&M University) so I pretty much let him set the itinerary. Our last stop before heading home was a few days in Dublin Ireland. We stayed in the heart of the Temple Bar District. For those of you that are familiar with Austin, the temple bar district is somewhat analogous to the 6th street district in Austin. Think blocks & blocks of bars & restaurants with the sound of music flowing out of every door. While I enjoyed all the traditional Irish music, I’ll never forget drinking Guinness in a crowded bar with a few hundred Irish all singing a rousing chorus of John Denver’s "Take me home Country Road" . Our last night in Dublin I took this HDR photograph of ‘The Temple Bar’ bar on Barra an Teampaill in the Temple Bar district. Got that?.

The Little Things in Life
austin texas

This little thing has been a nice distraction for my holidays. This is actually a perfect little fairy that I got for my perfect little daughter who still believes that everything is both real and unreal at the same time. She doesn’t yet realize (or care) about what is possible and impossible. She has this wonderful free-spirit that is delicate and innocent – a soft way of holding my hand with intent as her grip loosens while she falls asleep.

I got her this little winged muse for the holidays – a tiny jewelry box for little things that she likes to use to make herself pretty for me.

Having kids running around is very nice for the artist in me… (uh oh – stream of consciousness warning – but don’t worry I am not a blogger who listens to the same Enya song 37 times in a row) It reminds me that it doesn’t really matter what is real and not real that affects the state of mind… To her fairies and magical forest creatures are real and full of wonder. They affect what she thinks and what she does… Then as adults, we are not supposed to think about that stuff any more because it is for children, but don’t we still fill up our heads with other things that are not real? Not only do we fill our heads up with non-corporeal visions, but most of them aren’t any fun at all! So, I say, why not go ahead and fill up our adult heads with fantastical things that may or may not be real, and have fun with it? I fill my head with things that have a deep truth and a fantastical nature… I suppose you can see some of that bleed out in my photos… and many of these things that are in my head actually come true in unexpected ways. There are elements of my brain that are like Big Fish and The Fall — all of it is there and happening within various levels… I am glad movies like that exist and kids exist… reminding us of what is secretly acceptable.

a flickering g
austin music photos

The Italian band /placeholder/ recently released a single called "a flickering g" whose cover art was designed by an artist named kayenta and is based on a photo taken by me. The band’s music is really good and worth a listen if you are into electro/rock. I’m honored that they asked me to contribute to their latest project.

The original photo shows a single button on an elevator control panel at the Austin Museum of Art.

Submitted to the Flickr group 7 Days of Shooting.

Fall sunrise in Austin
austin music

Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
We are finally getting nicer temps down here in steamy Austin, which is nice. I love this time of year and the fall weather is the biggest reason why I do. This shot shows the Austin skyline on a recent morning. You can see that The Austonian (the big one on the right with the crane on top) is nearing completion. I believe the one in the middle under construction is the new W Hotel and Residences. The W will also include a new home for Austin City Limits, the popular music show filmed here. The trees in front prevent you from seeing Town Lake (aka Lady Bird Lake) which has a great hike and bike trail around it and runs through the middle of downtown. Austin is a cool town, if you get a chance come check us out.

The Remarkables
austin

If these mountains don’t have the coolest name ever, then I don’t know what does!

The mountains border the lake in Queenstown, but right before they dip into the deep water, a gentle dollop of green hills present themselves. They are those soft kind of New Zealand hills – the kind that look like you could just take a giant thumb and mush them around into one shape or another.

Beautiful Austin at Sunset
austin texas

I went downtown on Sunday night to work on some new drawings, and I was pretty sure that the gray clouds would not be conducive to shooting. But then, just as the sun dipped below the horizon, it tore through the city with bright pinks for about 10 minutes. I sped over to the other side of the Colorado River and jumped out for a quick shot. Luckily, I always keep the D3X in my car with me in case of a photo emergency like this.

In other news, I finally did that 25 Things thing that has been bouncing around Facebook. If you don’t have a Facebook account, I copied the 25 Things here to the site…

Personal Computer have changed the people life. And every person have a PC in their home in a normal family. And my opinion every one need a PC. But due the the huge amount of use of the energy due to the Computer in huge sector, the energy consumed is growing day by day. And there must be some solution to this problem. If the huge computer can be made to work in low power available then we can managed the energy saving and bring a revolution in the world.

After some research we found that green pc has been introduced by some people around the world and has been a great success. It has a saying that its energy costs reduced 60% of the current energy consumption. So a Low Power PC can be a great revolution for the people and countries.

Its not just about the power consumption, but they are also the cheapest found on market. If people are really concious about the energy and the money then, I suggest people surely should get a one. I have order a piece for myself, as every good things should be started from ownself.

Save energy, Save world – Go green.

In the previously uploaded version of this photo, Sam suggested a 1:1.5 aspect ratio for the cropping of this shot, which brings some method to the madness, I think. I’m having a really tough time deciding which version I prefer, so for now (and probably forever) all of them will remain up.
