I (finally) got out to try and capture some of the spectacular wildflower displays of 2010 when Beverly & I discovered this ranch near Chalk Bluff Texas. Bluebonnets & Indian Paintbrushes covered the gently rolling hills as far as you could see. After taking a few images we took the blanket out of our trunk & had a picnic under the huge oak tree near the center of the photograph. The weather was perfect & the scent of wildflowers filled the air. It really does not get much better than this.

The London Eye

I took this on the last PhotoWalk in London, so it’s about time I post it! I won’t be able to process the Austin ones for a bit… this is a busy time for me… you’ll have to forgive me!
Half of the fun of the PhotoWalk is people posting and sharing photos after the event. Even though everyone is taking photos of the same stuff, it is cool to see so many different perspectives. I’m pretty sure we all took photos of the London Eye on that evening, and this is the one that I made.

The Roadside Beauty Salon

Are you ever driving down the road and you see something that looks like it might be an interesting photo? But then, you start thinkin’ about turning around to take a photo, and then you think about it some more, and then by the time you get around to really asking the question in a serious way, you’ve discovered you’ve gone much too far and it would be silly to turn around now? Well that almost happened to me here… but I trained myself a while ago just to immediately turn around and not ask questions. This is a similar phenomenon to the "just 5 more minutes in bed" problem, which is also a slippery slope.
I found this beauty salon one evening when driving between Houston and Austin. It was just sitting there, all neglected…. and I felt like someone needed to pay attention to it, so I did for a short while.

360 Light Trails (2)

Pennybacker Bridge, Austin, TX
Taken from one of may favorite places in Austin–off the cliffs near the 360 bridge.
Its been a while since I posted an image of the 360 bridge from the surrounding cliffs. The image from 6 months ago was taken from the other side of the highway. This was taken from the cliffs on the more popular west side. There is a faint trace of downtown Austin on the horizon on left side of the photograph.

Long Center Patio & Austin Texas Skyline

Here is yet another view of the Austin Skyline from the Long Center for the Performing Arts. (Can you tell I like this view of Austin?) This photograph was made the same evening the I shot the Austin Skyline Panorama. (You can see that photo here.) When I photograph I virtually always do multiple angles and perspectives of my subject matter. Due to time constraints, I generally only retouch one of the images immediately to post. Later it’s always fun to go back through my files after some time has past to mine another photograph. It’s interesting how an image that did not jump out at me during the first pass will really stand out during a second look. This image was like that. When I was browsing through my photographs for my (sometimes) daily posting I found this shot of the Long Center. It’s hard to say, but I may like it better than the original Panorama.

All Saints of America Mission

While searching for Win at Wynn, my aunt and I ended up at the Antiochian Orthodox Mission in Homer Alaska. This was a hand-built building made by the people who live and work there and was nearly complete. Father Paul Moses Jaroslaw was nice enough to let me take some photos inside. One thing I couldn’t capture in any of my photos was how wonderfully this place smelled, both due to the freshness of the building which was made from wood they milled their selves, as well as some great incense that was burning before we even came in.

The Broken Spoke Bus for the Texas Top Hands Western Swing Band

Outside of the famous Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas, sits this old, dilapidated bus. I don’t know how long this thing has been sitting there, but it looks like quite a while. If it wasn’t for the rust, I guess you can assume its age from the phone number only having 7 digits. Remember that? 7-digit phone numbers now seem so quaint, like browsers without tabs.
I wonder if this bus still works. I know we have a lot of smart Texas readers who can probably tell us the answer to that little piece of trivia! Under the photo of the bus, I put up the older picture of the Broken Spoke dance hall that was taken about 20 minutes later as the sun was finishing it’s daily duties.
