Industrial Storage in Houston

On the drive back from Houston to Austin, I pulled over to a small town just outside the sprawl. One of them had a bunch of old industrial tanks, pipelines, towers, chutes, and other mysterious bits and pieces. The light was getting just about right, so I started walking around to explore it with my tripod. I set up here and fired away.

Where the Secret Texas Illuminati Meet

This is shot from the backside of the Texas capital. Austin-area photographers know the spot well!
I don’t really believe in government conspiracies because it really requires a large group of very intelligent well-coordinated people to carry off a conspiracy. I just can’t think of enough people in the government that could pull something like that off!
We ended up over here during our Photowalk last month… I saw a few people over in this direction shooting away, and some of these shots showed up in the post-photowalk sharing. Thanks again to everyone that came out to that deal!

The Continental Club on South Congress in Austin

Here is the next in the series of my collection of the classic spots around Austin. I actually shot this on the same night that I took the Austin Hotel shot. You can probably see a similarity in the deep blue sky that we had just after dusk that evening.
People always look at me suspiciously when I set up the tripod for a major shooting event. I’m sure that if you use a tripod that you end up with the same reaction. It’s typically 90% confusion and 10% wonder. Either way, I tend to just ignore everyone, like I’m playing a game and they are NPCs milling around.

Hamilton Pool near Austin, Texas

At last, the final version of this image (until I learn some new tricks)! Hamilton Pool is one of the best kept secrets in Central Texas. It took me 10 years to find it but I’m very glad I did. The place is a spectacular circular swimming hole half covered over by the massive remains of the previous cave’s roof. It’s pretty tricky to photograph and this image is actually a composite of 4 shots taken with different exposures.
I spent a day last week at a fabulous Photoshop seminar by Ben Willmore during which he spent the time talking about various post-processing techniques. Armed with these new tricks, I got back to this image and have now got it to a point that I am happy with it.
For those interested in what’s changed, I’ve added a play-by-play account on my blog here.
Now all I need is to find a cloud that isn’t burned out and drop that in…..
EDIT 1/25/11: OK – I couldn’t leave that sky alone. You can find the next (dare I suggest "final"?") version here.

Heart of Satan – What it looks like when fireworks explode inside of a storm cloud over a river

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!
This is not like me! I normally never publish a second photo from a very similar location that is also close in subject matter to the first. This one is taken from the same vantage point as the other fireworks shot here in Austin. Ever since I took that first shot, I’ve returned to this location to see if something else amazing will happen.
On this particular night, there was one of those looming thunderstorms, when the clouds are alarmingly low to the ground and black/green in color. They launched the fireworks from the same spot as usual, but they would actually explode inside the cloud. The lower half would burst downward, carrying a trail of fire behind it. The scene reminded me of a giant electric jellyfish of sorts.
The main shot from which this was taken was shot at 17mm (although later cropped), f/5.3, ISO 100, and -1 EV. The exposure was 2 seconds.

Stevie Ray and the Austin Skyline; 2011

I’ve photographed the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue in Austin Texas several times & every time I’m there someone has left a gift for Stevie on the base. Last time there was a red rose, this time it was a guitar pick lying at his feet.
